I came upon this resource the other day. It is a Ted Talk from a woman who lives with Schizophrenia. She talks about times of her illness and about how she is in recovery. She talks about the prognosis she was given “grave” and how she overcame that. She talks about how she kept trying to get off or lower on medication because that meant she was less messed up. I could relate to a lot of what this woman said. About expectations sometimes given due to your diagnosis. About trying to be on the least amount of medication possible, so you can convince yourself you’re not really ill. The thing I related to the most was at the end she talks about how she is faculty at a college and her work in academics and how it gives her brain something to do. How she thinks that has helped her from relapsing. It seems I’m always trying to convince others that going to school and learning and that whole process helps me, it does have a little stress but often times it’s much better than the potential harm.
